Our products are made, specifically, to engage and involve people to be more productive in their interactions at work. Having meaningful conversations, creating new ideasand creating a sense of ownership within the team has never been so simple.
Why People Participate (And Why They Don't)
Everyone knows that managing teams is difficult at times. But that doesn't mean it should be complex. Here are the four simple rules we use at The Square Wheels Project to make great tools that are simple to understand, fun to use and super effective:
Start by making it safe. When do you take the plunge and dive into a pool? The answer is only when you decide it's safe enough to do so. Group activities and team discussions are a bit like diving into a pool. Unless people feel confident and safe about sharing their thoughts and ideas, they aren't going to jump in!
Become more "interested" rather than "interesting."
Let's face it, the idea of a 1-hour lecture is enough to put most people to sleep. But is this because the material is not interesting enough or is it that we are not interested? The difference between "interesting" and "interested" is critical for creating participation and involvement. If you want to engage people, concentrate on being more interested and less time trying to be interesting.
Remember to make it "ours." Nothing creates more of a barrier between a manager and the team than using the word "I." Leaders are often frustrated by the casual attitudes of team members toward solving problems and taking action. One reason for this can be the language they regularly use. People are much more willing to participate and take ownership when the problem is "ours," the challenge is for "us" to overcome or the question is one that "we" must answer.
Make it real...and keep it that way!
Knowing a life jacket will save you from drowning is one thing, but taking action and inflating it is what really counts! Imagine meeting with your team to discuss ideas for improving efficiency. Everyone is involved and some great suggestions and insights are tabled. Does that make the session a success? Not so fast. The truth is that involvement and participation at those levels are unlikely to be repeated without action. Getting people involved is the easy part. To keep them switched on, you must follow through. Sticking to these rules after the session also helps!
